Nestled in an old Franschhoek heritage building, Huguenot Fine Chocolates emerges not just as a purveyor of delectable treats but as a testament to the seamless fusion of heritage preservation and functional design. A transformation of this once-dilapidated space into a chocolate haven.
The project presented a thrilling challenge for the team, tasked with revitalising a structure steeped in history yet marred by neglect. Collaborating with passionate entrepreneurs who possessed an exceptional product but lacked the vision to elevate their brand.
Drawing inspiration from the essence of chocolate-making, I opted for a rawer finish, incorporating tiled flooring to maintain the requisite coolness essential for working with chocolate. Eschewing LVT flooring, which proves incompatible with the sticky residue of cocoa, the choice of materials underscored a commitment to both authenticity and functionality.
A subdued grey palette, punctuated by handmade tiles, imbues the space with an air of artisanal charm, while traditional chocolate hues of deep browns and coppers add warmth and richness. Simplicity allows the client ample flexibility to showcase their merchandise, which undergoes periodic rotation.
Strategically injecting a pop of vibrant orange onto the entrance door, I aimed to not only enliven the facade but also enhance visibility, increasing traffic to the store. Situated slightly off the beaten path, this attention-grabbing touch ensures that Huguenot Fine Chocolates stands out amidst its surroundings.
